Have you got a cable TV?

Since I set up cable TV at home, my knowledge has been broadened much. It also helps me have many more different views about the world, not only from Vietnam like before. And now if I were asked about what are my favorite programs, there would be many

The channel I watch most is CNN, a popular new channel. All the hot news around the world are updated constantly. There are also many special programs like: CNNConnect, Talk Asia... which I like very much. Another new channel is BBC, like CNN but is done by UK instead of US. I don't like it so much because the sound is more difficult to listen than CNN, but the music is beautiful

The most interesting channel is certainly the Discovery. Today I have seen about the Genghis Khan on this channel. The program was designed excellently and makes me have much feeling . Another interesting channel is HBO, only show films, but like BBC, is too difficult to listen.

There are still many programs but those channels above are the best. And if you have ever watched these channels, you should give them a try

Learning English from ABC...

In the plan to develop English skills, I decided to take an English course at an English centre. And today is the first day of my English class Image.

At first, I had a little boring because many members in the class seems not to be dynamic and the teacher also looks good for nothing Image. But just a few minutes later, the teacher soon proved to be an interested person and he attracted everybody in the class listen to him with all concentration.

And I have gained many experience from him. He told us that he was a native English speaker and he was trying to learn Vietnamese Image, so he explained the difference between two languages very clearly.

- Learning English is like drawing a triangle: one peak is Listening, the others are Speaking and Reading/Writing. Obviously, you cant draw a triangle if lacking one of peak. The same in English, you cant improve only one skill without improving the others. And maybe this reason makes sense for my English progress in the recent days because I'm trying to improve all skills, not only the communication but also reading & writing.

- If you don't use something, you will lose it: For example, if you have a lover, but you dont love her, then you will lose her Image. There is no exception for English, if you don't use it, you will lose it.

- English is crazy language : You can see it has many irregular rules. And therefore, the crazier you are, the easier you learn English Image . Hehe, now I succeed in finding the answer why some friends told me that I spoke English quite well, just because I'm so crazy Image.

And these are still other things I dont remember... Hihi, today is an interesting day for me. It seems that 200$ for one-month English course is not expensive. Hope I can continue getting more experience in the following days Image.

How to compare the standard of living?

What do you do if one of your fiend ask you to help him compare the standard of living between two countries such as Thailan and Vietnam Image?  Maybe you will tell him to use the "GDP per capita" , which is the avarage value a person earns in one year. But this method is inappropriate. Why? Look into an example

100$ in Vietnam can help you have a good living in one month. But with the same amount of money in US, you cannot pay for one-month house renting. And it's very clear that $100 in Vietnam is more valuable than 100$ in US.

So how can we compare the standard of living? That's PPP - Purchasing Power Parity, the amount of goods a person can afford to buy with his income. Below are PPP/GDP of some countries.

US                    41399$ / 42000$
Japan              30615$ / 35757$
Malaysia       11201$ / 5042$
Thailand       8368$ / 2659$
China              7198$ / 1709$
Vietnam        3025$ /618$

And it is quite easy to infer from figures above, the standard of living in US is 13 times more comfortable than in Vietnam Image, follow by Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, China with 10 / 3.7 / 2.6 / 2 times than Vietnam. Maybe it the main reason make many Vietnamese immigrate to US  Image

Final question, how do people calculate the PPP index? Unfortuanately, I do not study about Finance, so I cant help you answer it Image. But a completed answer can be easily found on Wikipedia.org

Put myself in an English environment

I have learned English for more than 10 years, but my English is not as good as it should be, maybe because of the method. Up to now, all my English classes are just for examination Image. Hichic, I must find another way to learn it efficiently. And I decided in the next 4 months, I will put myself in an English environment, so that I can practice it everytime and everywhere I can

- Reading : Give up all Vietnamese version of
daily newspaper such as: Tuoi Tre, Thanh Nien... and change to Thanh Nien daily, Vietnam News, Google News... In addition, every two days, I will get information about one country on the Wikipedia.org. Now I have finised reading about US, China. It's too interesting for me to continue and maybe after this semester, I will have an overview about all countries in the world Image

- Writing : Learn more about English grammar on BBC and how to write a good English essay. Try to practice writing in English as much as possible. As a result, from now on, all my blog will be written in English. (Hichic, so sad because writing in Vietnamese make many people visit my blog Image)

- Listening : I have found two good resources to help me improve my listening. News everyday on Special English and BBC English News. I will also buy an USB Humax driver (about 80$) so that I can watch cable TV on my laptop.

- Speaking : Practicing this skill is the most difficult. Maybe I should take an English class with a foreigner teacher to have an environment to speak. Besides that, I will join an English club on Sunday at the Youth Centre, attend many English seminars and trying to talk with all my friends in English. So all my close friends, please prepare...Image

OK. That's a good plan. Hope that after this semester, my English will be good enough for me to watch an English film and work in an English speaking country Image

The World Is Flat : Vision for the Future

It took me nearly a month to finish reading "The World Is Flat - a brief history of the 21th century". This is one of the best books I've ever seen. Not only because it has changed my mind, but also broaden my vision for the future Image.

The most useful thing I gain from the book is the anwser for the question: How to join the flatting world? In general, it's also the way for Vietnam to catch up with other developing countries. The answer includes three steps:
1. Good infrastructure
2. Good training
3. Good management

Perhaps it's too difficult to understand. A real example is How to establish a good company? First the company should have a good Internet and phone connection for the employees to exchange information. Second, the employee can only work well if they have a good training. Third, the company must have a group of people with a management skill to control the whole company.

How many elements Vietnam having now?
- Infrastructure : Very bad, the connection is not good and not stable
- Training : Lots of articles on many newspapers in the recent days mention about it, so it's no need for me to repeat
- Management : very big problem. For example, looking into all state-owned company in Vietnam now.

Although Vietnam is still lacking lots of things, it seems that many people don't realize it or they know but don't want to change anything, especially change themselves. Hichic, how many years will it take for Vietnam to become a developing country?
Image

But I'm not sad  anymore. Althought I cannot change this society, change the city where I live...  but I find out that I can change myself, my family and some of my friends around Image. Good people will make a good society. Do you agree with me?

Trying to improve English!

Working for Google is one of the most funny thing for programmers all over the world and so do I.

Few days ago, I decided to apply for Google Internship at Beijing this summer.  On the day after, they reply me that : "OK. Please prepare for the interview through phone". Hichic, I'm so worried because my English communication isn't very well, it's just enough for me to use in everyday activities. But now I have to use it for a long interview which will take about 2-hours and to answer all questions involving my major IT.  An impossible mission!!!

But I said to myself "Ngon, although you can't pass this interview but you must try your best". And ... it makes me very tired Image. One week diving into English : visitting BBC site for listening, going to some English club for speaking... trying many ways to improve as quick as possible.

Tonight, after checking my progress, I feel more confident than last week. Although it cannot help me pass the interview but I have realized that English communication is an important factor if I want to get more successes in the future.

So ...continue to improve English this summer.  Hope to have a chance to go to London for one month to practise English and also visit relatives Image.
